Me: will Maklit help with housework?
Mom: yes! Cooking, washing…..
Me: what about Miki (boy twin)?
Mom: yes he can fold and iron
Yay mom! She said she wants Miki to know and understand everything. However, she said her perspective is not common in Ethiopia and that her husband disagrees but she will stand up to him. I am really excited because I’ve heard a lot about how girls struggle in school because of their at home duties and I was really happy to hear how mom will handle it. I tried to find out if she was different because of how she was raised or if university affected her but I don’t think she was able to point to one factor when I asked. It is hopeful though because if this perspective exists in society surely it must grow! Or maybe I am overly optimistic!
